The state received massive amounts of rain that caused flash flooding of homes and roads.
President Joe Biden issued an emergency declaration for Vermont, authorizing the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to address the catastrophic flooding currently affecting the state.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Northeast experienced 7.5 inches of rain within six hours on Sunday afternoon, and the state of Vermont received an additional 5.28 inches of rain on Monday. This caused flooding in thousands of homes, tainted the water supply, and made public travel nearly impossible.
Governor Phil Scott stated that this is even more water than Vermont experienced during Hurricane Irene in 2011, stating, “Irene had about a 12-hour duration of rain, and then it was over.“ He continued, “This is different. We’ve had like 48 hours of steady rain,” adding more rain is expected in the coming days.
Through President Biden’s emergency authorization, FEMA will be on the ground helping with emergency housing, water, and evacuation coordination.
